The PID SBP® partition inserting device for SMI packaging machines has been designed in order to insert stretched board pre-assembled partitions into cardboard boxes. This is often done in order to prevent fragile products from damage, thus as glass containers or containers with expensive labelling.
The device can be assembled to WP series wrap around carton packaging machines from the Italian packaging machine manufacturer SMI. With the partion inserter in operation the packaging machine can run up to a speed ao 45 packs per minute, provided the basic WP packaging machine has been deliverd at this speed as a minimum.
The PID SBP from SMI will be placed at the packaging machine inlet, directly above the package formation section. While the incoming containers are being laned into single parallel rows, the partion inserter device takes pre-assembled stretched boards from the partition magazine by means of suckers, that are mounted onto an two-axis mechanical arm.
The device opens the partition and lowers it into the product formation before they move into the pack collation section, just before the containers are collated tightly together. In the next step the containers are grouped into the requested patterns and they are then packed into a wrap-around cardboard box within the core packaging section of the WP machine.
Comparing to traditional partition inserting systems that used to handle non-preassembled partitions, the PID SBP from SMI allows the packaging industry to:
- save valuable floor space, since the partition magazine as well as the partition inserting unit are mounted on top of the main packaging machine and do not form a machine on their own. The basic machine dimensions remane nearly the same as for the basic wrap around packaging machine.
- save money by lowering the purchase cost for the partitions. The pre-assembled partitions are about 20% lower in price. There is also saving to the requierd partition storag volume, as the pre-assembled partitions require about 60% less space than conventional ones.
- by means of the high performance of the device and the ability to handle pre-assembled partitions as well as automatic partition loading from the partition magazine the operating speed of the partition inserter is remarkably high.
- the partitions are also less sensitive to humidity and changes in climate
